The win streak is now three-in-a-row and counting for O’Brien Award winner San Pail, who strutted his stuff once again en route to capturing the $42,000 Open Trot at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday evening
.
The multi-talented six-year-old son of San Pellegrino shot into the three-hole from his post eight starting spot, but he didn’t stay there for long. Randy Waples called on San Pail to sprint to the top in the second quarter, and with little resistance from the competition he cleared to the lead.
After CR Muscle Power and Merited Victory battled to the quarter pole in :26.4, it was San Pail who hooked up with CR Muscle Power at the mid-way point in :56.1. San Pail brushed by that foe and was a clear leader at the three-quarter pole in 1:24.4. A :27.3 final quarter was more than enough for San Pail to win over a hard-closing Armbro Chronicle. Chick N Tell, who made a late break, was third.
San Pail’s 1:52.2 clocking equaled Define The World’s national season’s record for older male trotters. That John Bax pupil set the mark earlier this year at Woodbine Racetrack.
“He’s such an amazing animal, and they’ve got him so good,” said driver Randy Waples. “I just can’t believe how much stronger he’s come back this year. Every year it seems he gets a little bit stronger, but especially this year. He’s just all racehorse.”
Trainer Rod Hughes co-owns the gelding with Port Perry, Ontario’s Glenn Van Camp, who also bred the winner of last year’s Maple Leaf Trot. The 26-time winner has banked more than $98,000 this year and more than $1.1 million in his career.
