The third winningest Standardbred of all-time, Southwind Amazon, captured the featured $10,800 Open Pace this Saturday (May 20) in 1:54.1 with driver Art McIlmurray in the bike.
The Paul Holzman trainee made his return to the Michigan oval a winning one as he sat off the pace set by Jets Sureshot and Go Dancing A before making a sweeping three-wide move down the backstretch to grab command and win easily by 4-3/4 lengths over the field of five other rivals. Commander Bob closed well for second with Jason Merriman in tow and Catch Me Conrad and Lindsay Moen got up for third.
Southwind Amazon pushed his career earnings to $1,457,372 and has amassed 127 wins to date, just one win behind Rambling Willie, who is the second winningest Standardbred in modern-day harness racing with 128 wins.
Driver Art McIlmurray took home four driving wins on the night while Justin Irvine had a driving double.
