Gold Cup Finalist Returns To CDP

Hilo, a finalist in the 2009 Gold Cup & Saucer, has returned to the Maritimes after racing at Yonkers Raceway in New York and Meadowlands Racetrack in New Jersey to take on the top class Saturday night at Red Shores

Owned by Paul Gray of Pugwash, N.S., Hilo, a lifetime winner of $129,955, has drawn Post 8 for driver Marc Campbell against some of the region’s top pacers including Pans O Silver and Brodie MacPhee, who rallied to win last week in an impressive 1:57.3. Outlawpositivcharg drew Post 3 for driver Terry Gallant while Yankee Sun, who dominated the Island’s top class in 2009, gets reunited with Kenny Arsenault from Post 5.

Another newcomer creating headlines makes his first appearance in the featured event. Babes Gold, a recent purchase for Joey Squires and Bethany MacLeod of Charlottetown, has wicked gate speed. The five-year-old gelding has chart-lines posting opening quarters in :26.4 seconds. Driver Vince Poulton gets the driving assignment from brother Gary, who now handles the training duties. Roi De Coeur BG, with Brian MacPhee in the bike, and McHales Gravy round out the power – packed field. Danny MacDonald will do the driving for trainer Jamie Smith and owner Michael MacDonald of Charlottetown.
