Odds-on favourite Dragin The Wagon and driver Anthony Haughan pulled off the victory in the featured $7,500 Preferred 3 Trot at The Raceway at the Western Fair District on Wednesday night, holding on in a three-way photo finish.
With the inside post advantage, Dragin The Wagon led from gate-to-wire in the two minute mile. The five-year-old gelded son of Angus Hall fronted the field through fractions of :28.3, :59.3 and 1:29.3 while Prakasmakesperfect (Alfie Carroll) launched a mild first over attack on the backside during the second lap of the track. Sophomore colt Luck O The Irish (Tom Durand) then rallied three-wide around Prakasmakesperfect heading into the stretch while trotting mare Stormont Kate (Bruce Richardson) pulled the pocket. Both late-challengers managed to make it into the win photo, but Dragin The Wagon held on by a neck.
The homebred trotter, an 18-time career winner with over $107,000 in purses earnings, is owned by James, David and Michael Cantelon. The 3-5 favourite paid $3.50 to win.
