The weather was beautiful, and the racing was too Saturday night at Hanover Raceway. A large crowd filled the grandstand to watch 12 great races as part of the long weekend festivities.

Saturday evening was Hockeyville Night at the races, a tradition that has been taking place since Hanover’s bid to become Kraft Hockeyville several years ago. To celebrate hockey in the community, Hanover Raceway gave away several bikes to children who wore their hockey jerseys to the races on Saturday. Thanks to Hanover Raceway and Canadian Tire of Hanover, five lucky kids went home with brand new bikes. These winners were Heidi Allen of Kincardine, Matt Henry of Mt. Forest, Kaedyn Ross of Hanover, Drew Wakeham of Flesherton, and Beth Walpool of Chatsworth.

On the track, the big winner was local favourite Chasin Jiffy. In his 2012 debut, the eight-year-old son of Village Jiffy got off to a winning start in upset fashion. With Doug And Dude looking for his third straight win for trainer Isaac Waxman, Chasin Jiffy came from behind to overtake the lead in the stretch. Terry Fritz steered the horse to victory for trainer Gary Mahon of Owen Sound, Ont. The win was Chasin Jiffy’s 19th lifetime victory as Fritz tripped the wire in 1:56.1. Chasin Jiffy went off as one of the longest shots in the five-horse field and paid $21.70 to win.

Trevor Henry was back at Hanover Raceway Saturday night after a night off last week and he picked up four wins on the card, winning the second race aboard Rustlemewithenvy, the sixth with Sauble Jackson, the 10th driving Live For Today, and the 11th driving Prime Time Poppa. Sauble Jackson picked up his 47th career victory for trainer Larry Hall of Tara, Ont. Henry also lowered Prime Time Poppa’s lifetime best time to 1:56.3, a full second off his previous mark set last year.

Hanover Raceway will be back it next Saturday night, with another great card of live harness racing action. Post time is 7:15 p.m.
