Sprite Seelster, with cover from 1-2 favourite Stormont Beautiful, climbed from sixth to first in the last half to score the victory in the featured fifth race on Thursday, May 1 at Woodbine Mohawk Park in a time of 1:56.1.

Getting away sixth from the eight hole in the $18,000 conditioned trot for fillies and mares, Sprite Seelster and Tyler Borth waited patiently until after the half to make their move, picking up cover from Stormont Beautiful (Bob McClure) to charge to the front. Stormont Beautiful looked to be in the clear and held the lead until the final strides, but couldn’t hold off a 27-second final quarter from the eventual winner, finishing second just three-quarters of a length behind Sprite Seelster. Green Glider (Trevor Henry) utilized a :26.2 final quarter to rally for third.

The three-year-old Sprite Seelster is now two-for-eight in her career, winning her season debut just two-fifths off of her lifetime mark for trainer Katie MacNeil, owner Elite Equine LLC of St. Thomas, Ont. and owner/driver Tyler Borth of Ingersoll, Ont. The winner's share of the purse brought Sprite Seelster's lifetime earnings to $57,347 in just eight lifetime starts. As the 5-2 choice, she returned $7.50 to her supporters.
