A North American racetrack has announced that it has hired a full-time female race announcer.

Angela Hermann has been named the Golden Gate Fields track announcer for the remainder of the 2016 winter/spring meet. The announcement marks the first time a female has been named a full-time track announcer in the United States.

“We are excited to introduce Angela to our Golden Gate fans,” Joe Morris, of The Stronach Group, was quoted as saying. “As you would expect, there were a number of very experienced and very well qualified announcers interested in the Golden Gate position, but we felt the time was right to bring our fans a new voice. Angela has the experience to be that voice.”

“The opportunity is extraordinary,” Hermann said. “I am so grateful Golden Gate and The Stronach Group gave me the chance to call races at a place where so many legends in racing have manned the microphone. This new challenge will hopefully inspire many more women to take the same chance. For a job that relies on my words, it’s hard to find them to describe the feeling it gives me. I’m very, very excited.”

Hermann will also continue to be a part of Golden Gate Fields’ simulcast show. She will join the Santa Anita simulcast team when Golden Gate ends its current season June 12.
