Detached from a contested first quarter, The Light Speed swept into the mix and capitalized as the favourite to win the $10,500 Preferred Handicap Pace on Sunday (May 15) at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
Lovemyrockinbird and Major Hill battled for the front all through the first turn and into a :25.4 first quarter until Major Hill folded and pulled to the back of the pack for a resting spot. The action settled to a :55.2 half, where trainer-driver Guy Gagnon sent The Light Speed into a full blitz against Lovemyrockinbird and crept closer towards the lead in a backside sprint to three-quarters in 1:22.3. Lovemyrockinbird regained ground with the inside advantage, but The Light Speed surged again with momentum straightening for the drive. The Michel Nolette homebred downed Lovemyrockinbird to the line to win by a neck in 1:51.1 while National Debt came from second over to finish third and Major Hill settled for fourth.
A four-year-old gelding by Moon Beam, The Light Speed won his third race from 12 starts this season and his 20th from 48 overall. He has earned $136,209 and paid $4.10 to win.
