Sportswriters Shine At Mohawk

Sons and daughters of Sportswriter were all the talk when his first crop hit the track last season, and it looks as though it could be more of the same this year for the son of Artsplace.

The Metro Pace and Pepsi North America Cup-winning pacer produced a trio of winners on Thursday evening at Mohawk Racetrack – one gelding and a pair of stakes-prepping fillies.

First up was Mesmerize Bluechip, who survived a first-over trip to win her 2015 debut for driver Steve Condren and trainer Casie Coleman. The lightly-raced youngster fended off late pressure to win by a neck over another Sportswriter filly, Southwind Geisha, in 1:55.4.

West Wins Stable, Christine Calhoun and April Campbell share ownership on the two-time winner who upped her lifetime earnings to $13,920 with the victory.

Scary Harry was triumphant in his debut for trainer Bob McIntosh, who will likely have some fine-tuning to do with his Sportswriter sophomore. The gelding, who recently made his way to Ontario after making his first two starts at Balmoral Park, cleared to the lead at the half and never looked back en route to his second straight decision. Though rough-gaited at times in the backstretch and despite bearing out in the lane, the speedy performer managed to win by 2-1/4 lengths in a career-best 1:53.3.

It was just the third lifetime start for the homebred who is owned by Gordon Wright of Charlotte, Michigan and Roger Welch of Beecher, Illinois. He’s banked just shy of $9,000 to date.

Business As Usual gave her sire the triple on the card thanks to her come-from-behind tally in the finale. Chris Christoforou guided the Casie Coleman pupil to the 1:53.3 decision over War Filly and another Sportswriter filly, Southwind Ginger.

West Wins Stable, Merlin Howse and David Mercer share ownership on the career winner of $35,625. In winning her 2015 debut, the pacing lass improved her overall record to 2-3-0 from 10 trips to the track.
