The City Of London Pacing Series will get underway tomorrow night at Western Fair Raceway with eight divisions carded, four for the males and four for the females.
The series is for four-year-olds and younger that are Ontario-sired non-winners of $10,000 in lifetime earnings as of April 1 of this year.
The male pacers will be featured in Races 2, 3, 4 and 5, while the females will be spotlighted in Races 6, 7, 8 and 9.
The first test will see Charmbo Willie attempt to extend his winning streak to five. The three-year-old gelding by Bo Knows Jate has won his last four races, all at the London, Ont. half-miler. Trainer John Rier of Kitchener bred and owns Charmbo Willie with Randy Rier of Hanover. Terry Kerr will drive from Post 2.
The final distaff division, Race 9, will find Northern Athena leaving from Post 1 for Robert Sparling, Jr. Dan Creighton trains the three-year-old daughter of Astreos for owner/breeder Dr. John McKnight of Meaford. Northern Athena, who has finished second in her last two starts at Western Fair, is the final foal from the outstanding mare Silver Reign, a winner of $766,000 in her racing career.
Another Astreos filly to watch in Race 9 is Holly Berry, who has yet to finish off the board in nine starts this year for trainer Jack Morgan and owners Dean and Kathryn Davidson of London. Nick Steward will drive from Post 5.
The City Of London’s second leg will be contested next Wednesday, May 19, with the top eight money winners from the two legs returning for the $40,000 (added) final on Molson Pace night, Friday, May 28.
The City Of London Series for trotters kicks off on Friday.
