Waikiki Hanover out-sprinted his Preferred 3 foes off the gate and trotted home a wide-open winner in the $7,500 feature on Sunday night (May 1) at Flamboro Downs.
Sent away from post three by driver Bob McClure, Waikiki Hanover drove on with the inner advantage among the four early leavers to claim the lead. The 9-5 second favourite proceeded to carve out opening panels of :28 and :57.3 with 6-5 first choice Alacrity moving first over after the field settled in line. However, Waikiki Hanover began to draw away from the rest of the field approaching the 1:27 third quarter pole and the result never in doubt from that point on as he cruised home to win by nearly six lengths in a season's best 1:57.4. Alacrity (Alfie Carroll) took over second-place and trotting mare Lady Dynamite (Brad Forward), the winner's stablemate, followed his cover to finish third.
Waikiki Hanover earned his fourth win of the year and third in his last four starts for trainer Alan and owner Elizabeth Fair of Ancaster, Ont. The six-year-old Cantab Hall gelding went over the $100,000 earnings mark with his 13th career win.
Waikiki Hanover's third race triumph kicked off a Sunday night hat trick for McClure.
