Jans Rich Girl defeated the reigning Mares Open champion and odds-on favourite Phone Terror to take the lion's share of the $12,500 purse in the Friday feature at Fraser Downs.

Leaving from post six in the seven-horse field, Jans Rich Girl and Scott Knight attempted to grab the lead early on, but settled into the pocket spot behind Prairie Illusion (Keith Clark), who had the inner advantage into a :26.4 opening panel.

As the field rolled in front of the grandstand for the first time, Just Fiction (Jim Marino) swept to command from third and reached the half in :56 flat. But Knight sent Jans Rich Girl after the new leader at the mid-way point and took over the top spot near the 1:24.4 third quarter station as even-money favourite Phone Terror (Serge Masse) pursued from fourth.

Jans Rich Girl and Phone Terror battled head-to-head around the final turn, but the former held off the latter to notch her 35th career win in 1:55 over the sloppy surface. Phone Terror missed by three-quarters of a length while Prairie Illusion came in third.

Jans Rich Girl paid $18.90 for the mild upset.

Knight trains the homebred Camluck-Rich Jan mare, who has earned over $300,000 in purses lifetime for the Sunbury Stables of Aldergrove, B.C. Jans Rich Girl now sports a record reading 3-2-3 in 10 Open starts during her eight-year-old campaign.
