Somwherunderheavn is off to a great start in her career with four wins and four seconds in her first eight starts at Miami Valley Raceway. The three-year-old filly, a homebred daughter of Nob Hill High owned by Sharon Fisher, earned her biggest payday thus far on Tuesday (April 4) winning the $22,500 final of the George ‘Red’ Owens Memorial late closer featuring female pacers who were non-winners of two pari-mutuel races or $20,000 when the series started.
Austin Hanners was the sulky-sitter behind Somwherunderheavn as he has been in all of her starts. The pair lived up to its even-money favourite status in the Owens final.
The winner, unraced at age two, got away fifth during the :27 opening quarter, then began a prolonged first-over attack prior to the :56.1 midway juncture. Second and lapped on to the leader Hysterical (Tyler Smith) when the leaders hit the three-quarters beam in 1:24.1, Hanners was able to urge a :28.2 final panel from Somwherunderheavn for a three-quarters of a length victory in 1:52.4—easily lowering the Steve Carter trainee’s lifetime best. Roknatninnetythree (Sam Widger) got up for second with Hysterical hanging on for third.
