Freshman Dan Patch Award winner Sweet Lou and A Rocknroll Dance, No. 1 in Hoof Beats/Trackmaster ratings, headline the list of eligibles for the 67th Little Brown
Jug. Economy Terror, voted best two-year-old filly pacer in 2011 by the U.S. Harness Writers Association, and unbeaten American Jewel, the O'Brien Award divisional winner, are early favourites among the eligibles for the 41st Jugette.
The $600,000-est. Little Brown Jug will be raced at the Delaware, Ohio fairgrounds on Thursday afternoon, September 20 and the $300,000 Jugette is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, September 19.
Sweet Lou earned the early favourite’s role among the 106 Jug eligibles with a seven and a half length World Record triumph in 1:49 over A Rocknroll Dance in the $650,000 Breeders Crown at Woodbine. Sweet Lou’s mile in 1:49 is the fastest mile ever by a two-year-old.
Sweet Lou, a son of Yankee Cruiser, is trained by Ron Burke and driven by Dave Palone, who won the 2005 Jug with P Forty Seven. Sweet Lou had 10 victories and two seconds in 12 starts and earned $688,117.
Bred by Seth Rosenfeld’s Birnam Wood Farms, Sweet Lou was a $38,000 yearling purchase by Weaver Bruscemi LLC, Lawrence Karr, Phillip Collura and the Burke Racing Stable.
“I’ve known for a while he’s a very good horse,” said Burke. “There is just something about him. He’s sound, he’s strong, and he doesn’t hit himself. He has perfect manners. He has everything you can ask for in a horse.”
A Rocknroll Dance, who finished second to Sweet Lou in the Dan Patch standings, ended his freshman year strongly, winning the $510,000 Governor’s Cup at Harrah’s Chester. In 11 starts, the son of Rocknroll Hanover posted seven wins including victories in the International Stallion Stakes and Bluegrass Stakes at Lexington’s The Red Mile. He earned $858,961 for the ownership team of trainer Jim Mulinix, Denny Miller and Jerry and Theresa Silva.
Yannick Gingris drove A Rocknroll Dance for the first time in the Metro Pace elimination at Mohawk Racetrack on September 3 and won. But, he finished second to Jug eligible Simply Business in the $1 million final.
Mulinix, a native of Wauseon, Ohio, is looking forward to racing against Sweet Lou again. He added that he would like to emulate trainer Ron Potter’s effort with Big Bad John, who won the 2011 Jug.
“Being from Ohio, it would be great if we could win the Jug.”
