The Light Speed and Guy Gagnon lived up to their status as the bettors' choice on the Sunday evening (April 30) card at Rideau Carleton Raceway after winning the $10,000 Preferred Handicap Pace.
As the gate pulled away, longshot Montysgonemarble was on the charge and made it to the front ahead of the pack. By the opening panel in :27.1, Montysgonemarble continued to hold the lead by only a neck as The Light Speed sprinted on the outside. The Light Speed took over and set the tempo as they rushed through the half in :58.4 and three-quarters in 1:27.3. Down the stretch, The Light Speed opened up by two lengths, but was met by a speedy National Debt (Pascal Berube). The Light Speed prevailed in the battle by a head in 1:56. Mayhem Like Me was third (Robert Shepherd).
The Light Speed (Moon Beam - Jayma - Camluck) is a winner of $228,579 in career earnings with a record of 31-25-7 in 77 starts. So far this season, the five-year-old gelding has posted three wins, a second and a third in five starts for trainer Guy Gagnon and owner Michel Nolette.
