Black Velvet As, a Kentucky Sire Stakes series winner at Oak Grove last season, won the $28,767 conditioned feature trot in her five-year-old debut at Miami Valley Raceway on Tuesday, April 28.
As even-money favourite Country Victory (David Miller) broke stride behind the gate, Black Velvet As and Chris Page left alertly from post one while Tally The Tab (Anthony MacDonald) left to her outside with Calculated Concept (Tyler Smith) three wide-into the turn. Tally The Tab went past Black Velvet As, but Calculated Concept pressed on and took command as they passed the quarter in :28.1. With Calculated Concept loose on the front, Black Velvet As pulled from third to go around the gapping Tally The Tab and settle into the pocket en route to the half in :56.2.
Calculated Concept led by a sizable margin over Black Velvet As on the backstretch, but the pocket-sitter got in gear and closed the gap approaching three-quarters in 1:25 and strode up to the outside of Calculated Concept with Volstarita (Luke Ebersole) in tow. Black Velvet As closed in on the leader as they came around the last turn and powered up down the lane to win by 1-1/2 lengths in 1:53.4. Calculated Concept finished second while Nelli Up (Kayne Kauffman) rallied up the rail for third.
The Anette Lorentzon-trained Black Velvet As took her eighth lifetime win in 32 starts and bolstered her career earnings to $413,177. The five-year-old daughter of Archangel-Provide As is owned by ACL Stuteri Ab. She paid $6.60 to win.
David Miller, Trevor Smith and Austin Hanners led the way with three wins each on the 14-race card. Tyler Smith and Chris Page each had two winners on the program.
With three race days remaining in the 2026 Miami Valley meet, racing will continue on Wednesday with a post time of 4 p.m.
