Going wire to wire, Euchred bottomed the field in the $2,500 Preferred Handicap Pace on opening night at Charlottetown Driving Park Saturday, April 28, winning by three lengths in 1:56.2.
The six-year-old Shadow Play gelding trained and driven by Terry Gallant grabbed control through a :28.4 opening quarter over Mr Irresistible sitting the pocket. Adkins Hanover, after breaking at the start, moved first over heading to the half, timed in :58.4, and lost stride while pursuing pacesetter Euchred into the backstretch, forcing Czar Seelster to fan wide off his cover.
Leading by two lengths past three-quarters in 1:27.4, Euchred turned for home and expanded his lead over Mr Irresistible despite broken equipment. Czar Seelster, after interference moving into the final turn, closed for third.
Owned by Kayla Walker, Euchred won his fourth race in 10 starts this season and his 33rd in 105 starts overall, earning $73,446. He paid $8.80 to win.
