Monticello Raceway’s Heritage Drivers Series will continue on Monday, May 24 with the fifth edition of the Maple Leaf Pace, the race that features drivers of Canadian descent
.
“On May 24 our Canadian neighbors celebrate Victoria Day and we could think of no better day to present our race,” noted Eric Warner, the track’s Director of Racing. “Victoria Day, which celebrates Canada’s sovereignty, is similar to our Independence Day here in the States.”
The Maple Leaf Pace will be the fifth preliminary leg of the tracks year-long series for drivers of different ethnicities. In late September the winning drivers in each of the ethnic prelims will battle in the final event of the series dubbed the All-American Pace.
Those already assured of a berth in the All American Pace by virtue of winning their ethnic preliminary legs include: George Polk, Jr. (Dr. Martin Luther King Pace); Jennifer Lappe (Lady Godiva Pace); John Gilmour. (St. Paddy Pace); and Alan Charles (Passover Pace).
Currently Warner is in the process of seeking drivers of Canadian descent to compete in the Maple Leaf Pace.
“We have quite of few drivers of Canadian heritage currently racing with us but we will need eight in order to have a full field,” Warner said.
Among the drivers of Canadian heritage currently racing here of whom Warner was referring to include: Jimmy Devaux, Jacques Primeau, Terry Finch, Bruce Borden and Ken Devaux.
“But we still need eight to fill the race,” Warner reiterated. “Any driver of Canadian descent interested in competing in our Maple Leaf Pace is asked to please contact me in the racing office at (845) 794-4100 ext. 557. Or they can call our publicity office at ext. 455.”
