For the fourth straight week, In High Cotton has won the $10,000 Fillies and Mares Preferred Handicap Pace at Fraser Downs. On Thursday evening (April 26), the six-year-old Kelly Hoerdt student made the trip from gate-to-wire to mark her 24th career triumph.
Scratched down to a field of five, In High Cotton, with trainer Hoerdt in tow, went to the gate as the outside assignee in the feature. Hoerdt sent In High Cotton to the top and they never looked back, hitting each panel in :26.4, :56.1 and 1:24.1 before crossing the wire 2-3/4 lengths the best in 1:53 over the 'good' track. Grey Sea (John Abbott) finished second and Pirate Booty (Terry Kaufman) grabbed the show spot.
In 95 career starts, the daughter of Somebeachsomewhere and the Western Hanover mare Olivette Hanover has posted a record of 24-17-16 with $228,317 earned. Owned by Hoerdt and Erna Corbeil, In High Cotton scored her fifth victory in 12 starts this year. In High Cotton returned $2.70 to win as the favourite.
Carson Abbott scored his first career driving win in the Thursday card opener with Gordon Abbott-trained Sea Treasure (Custard The Dragon-Cassidys Grin). Abbott got away sixth with the four-year-old mare before moving first over on a journey to the top. Clearing the lead at the three-quarters, Abbott Sea Treasure never looked back as they scored by one length in 2:01.2 for owner/breeder Seaspray Stables.
