It has been announced that Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame trainer William ‘Bill’ Wellwood will be posthumously inducted into the Waterloo Region Hall of Fame this Sunday (April 26).

The news comes courtesy of a report by the Cambridge Times that also quotes Wellwood’s daughter, trainer Paula Wellwood, as saying that her father would be quietly honoured with the accolade.

Paula was quoted as saying that her father “would be very thrilled” with the induction, adding that “He may not have expressed it, he was kind of to himself for that sort of thing, not much for the accolades and self-promotion, but he would be very proud of it.”

She was also quoted as saying, “I think it’s a reflection to us that he’s not forgotten,” adding that “It’s a nice honour when you live in this region, for sure.”

It would be nice if we as a society were to recognize people like Bill while they are still amongst us.

Just another great, almost daily reminder of how special Wm Wellwood was to me and harness racing.

Congratulations to William and I only wish that he were here to accept this wonderful honour in person. I had the pleasure of knowing Wm. for a long time, first meeting him in 1956. I vividly recall when he started in the sport and had the opportunity to spend quite a bit of time with him in those early years. He had an unprecedented career and excelled in every aspect of the business dating back to his days as a groom in his Uncle's stable. Despite his many successes, he never forgot from where he came.
We extend our best wishes to all of his family and share in their pride.
