Alberta newcomer Twin B Breezeway overcame her outside post position going from from last to first to earn her initial victory of the year in the $25,000 final of the Prairie Girls Stakes on Saturday afternoon (April 23) at Century Downs.
Driver Phil Giesbrecht made his move with the trailing Twin B Breezeway down the backstretch, sweeping three-wide past her rivals and moving into second on the final turn. With just one rival left to overthrow, Twin B Breezeway tracked down Green Light and Connie Kolthammer in the stretch to score the 1:59.3 victory by one and a quarter length.
Green Light had taken the lead during the third panel as Twin B Breezeway began to advance from the back of the pack. Pocketed early by My Camalina (Brandon Campbell) after a :27.2 first quarter duel, Top It Up (Dave Kelly) was flushed out of the two-hole at the half in :58 with Green Light following as the outer flow began to develop. Top It Up cleared to command and then Green Light took over near the 1:28.1 third quarter mark before the final lead change in the stretch.
An elimination runner-up to Credit The Shark, Twin B Breezeway paid $16.40 to win after being sent postward at odds of 7-1 in the final.
In the race for third-place, 9-5 favourite Credit The Shark (Keith Clark) edged out second choice L Dees Sunsetbeach (Travis Cullen) in a photo finish. My Camalina, Lovethatsixpack (Travis Bowman), Top It Up and Mods Mystery (Mike Hennessy) completed the order of finish.
Twin B Breezeway is owned by trainer David Lamont and Donna Wyse of Airdrie, Alta. The four-year-old mare by Badlands Hanover has earned top three finishes in her first four starts in Alberta this month after beginning her career in Ontario. The stakes win marked her second victory in 40 career starts and the time of the mile was new lifetime mark.
On the undercard, the Travis Cullen stable added to its meet leading numbers, scoring four wins on the day.
