Peter Chanak and Dana Shore’s Southwind Jaden ($9.40) made every pole a winning one in the featured $9,000 Open Pace on Sunday afternoon (April 22) at Century Downs.
Bobby Clark wasted no time with the five-year-old Bettors Delight gelding, splitting Silent Rescue (Gary Clark) and Somewhereinmexico (Paul Davies) to secure the lead midway on the first turn. After posting ambitious early sectionals of :27 and :55.1, Southwind Jaden opened up three lengths of clearance on a tiring Silent Rescue, which prompted Icy Blue Scooter (Philip Giesbrecht) to angle off the hub rail from third and gradually gain into the second spot through a :29.1 third quarter. Despite late deceleration, Southwind Jaden held his ground over Icy Blue Scooter by three-quarters of a length at the end of a 1:54.1 mile. Chalk Player (Jamie Gray) sustained a mid-race rally from astern to take third.
Sanford Campbell trains Southwind Jaden, whose third triumph in eight starts this season increased his career win tally to 16 and lifetime earnings to $95,686.
