Sweet Like Candy claimed her second stakes trophy with a front-stepping score in the $15,000 Marian Young Memorial Final at Fraser Downs on Saturday night.
The stakes event, which did not require eliminations, is for three-year-old pacing fillies that are B.C. owned, bred or sired and non-winners of $15,000 lifetime (no allowances) as of February 1, 2013.
With trainer Serge Masse in the sulky, Sweet Like Candy won a three-horse cavalry charge for the lead off the gate. The 1-9 favourite seated 113-1 longshot Yanotherhos (Brandon Campbell) and 9-2 second choice Alices Wonderland (Michael Hennessy) in second and third during the :27.1 opening panel.
Sweet Like Candy continued to lead the field of eight to the half in :58 before Alices Wonderland moved off the pylons. The first over attacked began to advance down the backstretch, but was still over one length off the leader by the 1:27.2 three-quarters mark and would get no closer.
Sweet Like Candy took off down the lane to win by over four lengths in 1:57 flat, shaving four-fifths of a second off her lifetime mark. Alices Wonderland settled for second while Yanotherhos stayed for third.
The winner returned $2.30 to her backers.
Sweet Like Candy was a runner-up in the Muriel Fornwald Memorial and swept the elimination and final of the Penny Bath Memorial in March. She now has four wins in 11 starts with nearly $30,000 banked in purses this year.
The three-year-old American Ideal filly is owned by Lucy Raymond of Surrey, B.C. and Roger McDow of Las Vegas, Nevada.
