Poor House will be making her first start at Cal-Expo for George Reider on Friday, April 22 in a sire stakes event after having been purchased privately earlier in the week by Reider and partners Dave Haness and Rick and Marlene Thomas.
Although still seeking her first win after 13 trips to the post, Poor House was a fast-closing third in the first stakes clash of the season two weeks ago, as she was beaten only a couple of lengths. She came back to finish second in a conditioned affair behind 50-1 Little Santamonica at most recent asking for Steve Hyman.
“Steve was heading back east, and he asked me if I wanted to buy this filly,” Reider explained. “She’s improving, the division is pretty wide open at the moment, and there are still seven stakes races left. I talked it over with Dave, Rick and Marlene, and we decided to take a shot.”
Poor House was 61-1 when the sophomore pacing fillies got together for that last stakes clash and still figures to be a price this weekend, but off her last two outings she’ll certainly get more tote respect than she got that evening. James Kennedy will be at the controls.
“I got my first chance to train her on Tuesday and she went [really] well,” Reider said. “It didn’t really figure into buying her, but I’ve had her full brother Check Raisin for a few weeks now and he won for us last week.”
Reider would love nothing better than to be posing for pictures with another offspring of Little Steven and Claim Check on Friday, this time for a $15,000 pot.
