The six-year-old Smart Shark gelding Outlawgrabbingears survived a first-over trek to score a narrow victory in the $13,000 Horses & Geldings Preferred 2 Handicap Pace at The Raceway at Western Fair District on Tuesday (April 19).
Clever Character cleared control to a :28.3 first quarter and slowed the pace to a :58.3 half, where trainer-driver Paul Davies gave Outlawgrabbingears his cue to fire out of third and press for the lead. Outlawgrabbingears steadily advanced to match strides with the pacesetter past three-quarters in 1:26.4 and soon edged to the lead coming off the turn. Beachin Lindy lunged off cover from third over down the center of the track to challenge Outlawgrabbingears late but hit the beam a head shy of victory at the end of a 1:55.4 mile. Alex Having Fun finished third and Clever Character faded to fourth.
Co-owned by Paul Davies with Nicole Davies, Outlawgrabbingears won his fourth race from 13 starts this season and his 33rd from 86 overall. He’s now banked $381,695 and returned $15.50 to win.
