A break in the first turn by Kendal Gustav impeded the progress of many horses in Monday’s $11,000 Preferred 2 for pacers, but Bestofthebunch was fortunate to avoid the commotion.
Bestofthebunch was hustled to the lead from Post 3, and Scott Coulter had the gelding chop out fractions of :28.1, :58.1 and 1:26.4 before using a :28.4 closing panel to defeat Tomitta Bayama by two lengths in 1:55.3. Race favourite Topcornerterror took home third prize in the five-horse affair.
Tim Myers trains the five-year-old son of Artistic Fella-Terinas Best for owner Boris Laus of South Woodslee, Ont. It’s back-to-back wins for Bestofthebunch in the track’s top class for pacers. He’s manufactured a 5-1-2 record from 12 starts this year while racking up more than $30,000 in purse earnings. The 20-time winner has stashed away in excess of $147,000 in his career.
Tero used the same tactical approach to capture the $7,500 Preferred 3 for horse and gelding pacers. Paul MacKenzie rolled the gelding through fractions of :27.3, :57 and 1:24.4 before using a :28.4 kicker to win by 1-1/2 lengths over Intended Royalty in 1:53.3. Stoney Durkin rounded out the Triactor ticket.
David Frey of Acton, Ont. owns and trains the four-year-old son of Western Terror-Pleasantville who improved his 2016 record to 3-2-2 from 14 starts with the victory. The seven-time winner is closing in on $50,000 in career earnings.
