The four-year-old Custard The Dragon gelding Codename Cigar Box continued his domination of the top class at Century Downs, cruising to his fifth-straight victory in the $10,500 Open Handicap Pace on Saturday (April 16).
Assigned the outermost post in the scratched-down field of six, trainer-driver Kelly Hoerdt floated Codename Cigar Box off the car while Munchie Chris cleared command to a :27.1 first quarter. Hoerdt slowly advanced on the rim with Codename Cigar Box and caught brief cover to a :57.2 half as Shark Week brushed for the lead out of third. Codename Cigar Box then took over command into the backstretch and burned to three-quarters in 1:24.4 before opening on his competition to the final turn. Through the stretch, he widened his advantage to six lengths by the beam while If Only Id Known took second and Shark Week faded to third.
Co-owned by Hoerdt with Fred Gilbert and Blair Corbeil, Codename Cigar Box has now banked $195,843 after winning his 12th race from 35 starts. He paid $2.80 to win.
