Just a week after son Brett MacDonald celebrated his 2,000th driving win, trainer Ron MacDonald had a milestone moment of his own, earning his 1,000th career training victory on Sunday, April 13 at Flamboro Downs.
MacDonald sent out four starters on the evening card, all of which earned a cheque, but the landmark win came in Race 8. Three-year-old Momas On A Roll (Big Jim-Sayso Hanover) delivered the memorable moment, riding a perfect pocket trip before surging up the inside to win by a head in 1:59.1 — with son Brett in the bike.
The 57-year-old Freelton, Ont. horseman is coming off a career-best season in 2024, having earned $858,102. He also clinched the training title at Georgian Downs last year and is showing no signs of slowing down in 2025. So far this season, he’s posted a strong 17-9-10 record and $172,960 in earnings, tying him for third in the trainer standings at Flamboro with 10 wins.
MacDonald has now amassed $7,531,380 in career earnings to go along with his 1,000 wins.
