Assiniboia Spat Has Been "Damaging"

Assiniboia Downs CEO Darren Dunn has gone on the record as saying that the current spat between the Manitoba Jockey Club, the Red River Exhibition Association and the Province of Manitoba is taking its toll on the upcoming season of live thoroughbred racing.

"Certainly it's been damaging," Dunn has told CBC News. "The phone was ringing off the hook in January for interest to come up here and spend six, seven months in Manitoba and spend a lot of money in Manitoba. We hit a brick wall when that happened."

It was reported in late January that the RREA was looking into taking over operation of Assiniboia Downs and incorporating live harness racing to the raceway's on-track offerings.
