Court Action Initiated Over Assiniboia

According to a report, the Manitoba Jockey Club has accused the provincial government of working in conjunction with Red River Exhibition Inc. to bankrupt the club in order to see Assiniboia Downs ultimately turned over to Red River.

A report by the Winnipeg Free Press states that court documents that have been filed indicate that illegal and improper means have been used cut funding to Assiniboia so the MJC would be forced to hand control of the raceway over to Red River Exhibition Inc.

The article also states that he MJC has applied for an interim ruling that would maintain funding agreements it currently has with the province and the Manitoba Lotteries Corp. until new arrangements can be finalized.

It was reported in late January that Red River was looking into taking over operation of Assiniboia Downs and incorporating live harness racing to the raceway's on-track offerings.
