Driver John MacDonald worked out a perfect, pocket trip for Match Bayama in Sunday’s $12,100 Preferred Pace at Rideau Carleton Raceway
, and the gelding took full advantage of the trip en route to notching his 28th lifetime victory.
The seven-year-old son of Goliath Bayama, who was sent off as the second favourite in the eight-horse tilt, stalked Best Show In Town through panels of :27.3, :57.2 and 1:26.1 before engaging in a final quarter sprint with that foe.
Match Bayama uncorked a :28.2 final frame to deliver the knockout punch to Best Show In Town, who was just a half-length behind the winner in a time of 1:55. Red Leaf Again tagged along to finish third.
The Sebastien Giroux-trainee worked his way into the winner’s circle for the fourth time this season in 13 tries. The career winner of $272,222 is owned by the partnership of Les Ecuries Giroux Inc., Kevin Skilton and Jacques Caron.
