North America Cup-eligible pacing colt Capitano Italiano was victorious in his seasonal debut earlier this month and backed up that initial win with another solid performance on Thursday (April 11) at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

Phil Hudon pointed the public's 4-5 choice to the front in Thursday's eighth race, a $17,000 conditioned pacing event, and he made the first call in :27.4. Capitano Italiano received no challengers through a relaxed :59 middle half -- fractions of :57.3 and 1:26.4 -- but his loneliness wouldn't last. Turning for home, Jody Jamieson popped the pocket with Surprising Credit and made a serious dent in the pacesetter's lead but Capitano Italiano found an extra gear late and rebuffed the challenge for the 1:53.4 winning score. Surprising Credit was second best with Cruise Captain (Sylvain Filion) in the show spot.

Owned by Bruno Comegna of Burlington, Ont. and trained by Nicky Comegna, Capitano Italiano (Captaintreacherous - On The Catwalk) now sports a 4-2-1 summary from nine lifetime starts with $41,780 in earnings. The sophomore gelding is one of 78 three-year-old male pacers still eligible for Canadian harness racing's richest prize, the 2019 Pepsi North America Cup.
