A pair of $27,500 Open events – one for distaffers and one for trotters – highlighted Friday’s 12-race card at The Meadowlands.
Radar Contact was a down-the-road winner in the Mares Open Handicap in 1:50.3 for the tandem of driver John Campbell and trainer Noel Daley.
Campbell hustled the mare to the top from Post 5 and successfully whacked out splits of :27.1, :55.4 and 1:24 with the seven-year-old daughter of Dontgetinmyway-Topville Cyberwave. She uncorked a :26.3 closing quarter to win by a length over Inittowinafortune. Cherry Bliss was another length back in third.
Sent off as the even-money favourite, Radar Contact improved her 2015 record to 4-6-0 from 12 trips to the track. Charles Stillings of Florida and Dean Ehrgott of Indiana share ownership on the 28-time winner who now boasts a bankroll that stands at $778,932.
Wind Of The North pulled off a 5-1 mild upset in the $27,500 Open Handicap Trot for driver David Miller and trainer Daryl Bier.
Miller hustled his charge to the lead from Post 6 and the pair successfully led the group through intervals of :27.2, :57 and 1:25.1 before out-kicking the field to the finish in 1:53.1. Lindys Tru Grit, who had just one rival beaten at the mid-way point, charged home to finish a neck back in second. Master Of Law came on strong to finish third. Meladys Monet, who was sent off as the 1-2 favourite, laboured to a seventh-place finish.
Bier owns the 15-time winner with Joann Dombeck of Davie, Florida. The partners watched the classy campaigner push his lifetime earnings to $249,731 with the win.
