Truro Raceway has announced that the Nova Scotia racetrack will host the first ever Atlantic Women’s Driver Challenge, an all-female driver’s event on Sunday, July 21, 2024.
The event will have seven female drivers compete in five races on Truro Raceway’s afternoon card. All four licensed female drivers in Atlantic Canada will participate, as well as three Ontario-based drivers. Headlining the event is Canada’s all-time leading female driver for wins and money earnings, Antigonish, N.S. native Clare MacDonald, and the two-time OLG Ontario Women’s Driving Championship winner Natasha Day.
“I’m honoured to be invited to participate in the Atlantic Women’s Driver Challenge at Truro Raceway," said Day. "So happy to see more tracks coming onboard with women’s races and more women drivers being recognized in the bike.”
The pride of P.E.I., driver Ambyr Campbell will represent her home province, while Truro’s very own Tammy MacKay will fly the colours as the sentimental hometown favourite. Impressive 2023 Inverness Raceway rookie driving sensation Monica Sutherland will look to show her stuff in the field, as will Ontario Women’s Drivers Championship driving participant and Midland, Ont. native Maggie Jones, and Kawartha Downs regular and Bailieboro, Ont. native Samara Johnson.
“I am very excited to take part in The Harness the Hope Ladies' Drivers' Fundraiser at Truro Raceway," said MacKay. "This charity event is for those who have been personally affected by breast cancer. There have been several fundraisers at quite a few racetracks to benefit cancer support programs, awareness and research within Canada.
"Taking part in Truro Raceway's Harness the Hope Fundraiser is a wonderful opportunity to benefit breast cancer research in our local area," MacKay continued. "To add to it, being part of a ladies' driver challenge is always exciting. I've been to quite a few of these events over the years, but nothing compares to racing at home. Being at your home racetrack with familiar faces, lots of good friends and a new grandstand facility will surely add to the day's excitement. I am very thankful for the opportunity to participate.”
Combined, the field has an incredible 2,202 career victories and just over $8.25 million in career purse earnings.
“We’re excited to have many of Canada’s top female drivers competing in this event," said Truro Raceway General Manager Steve Fitzsimmons. "We’d like to support more equity and diversity in our sport and we’re pleased to give these ladies the opportunity to showcase their incredible talent and abilities in our challenge.”
The event will be part of Truro Raceway’s Harness the Hope fundraiser. For sponsorship information on this event, email [email protected].
