Alberta-bred standout Mateo, a 2017 O'Brien Award finalist, was back in action on Friday, March 30 winning his four-year-old qualifying debut for new connections at Yonkers Raceway.

The Western Canada Pacing Derby champion set fractions of :28.3, :58.1 and 1:26.4 en route to a five-length qualifying win in 1:55.4 over a 'good' track with Jason Bartlett in the sulky for trainer/owner Richard Banca.

The gelded son of Blue Burner, who was previously campaigned in Western Canada by Justin Currie, Christine Cutting and Jim Marino, boasts a career record of 11-9-4 from 25 starts with just over $300,000 in earnings.
