The five-year-old Somebeachsomewhere mare In High Cotton pushed from her pylon post to the point and delivered on a 1:52 speed mission to take the $10,000 Fillies and Mares Open Pace at Fraser Downs on Thursday night (March 2).
Driver Dave Hudon hustled In High Cotton to a four-length lead by a :27 first quarter and carried her momentum through a :55.3 half. Miss Itunes mounted a first-over bid from last up the backside, but made only slight gains to three-quarters in 1:23.2. The quick fractions began biting into In High Cotton, but the Kelly Hoerdt pupil built enough cushion to coast to the finish a length winner over Miss Itunes with pocket-sitter Moosette third.
Hoerdt co-owns In High Cotton with Blair and Erna Corbeil. The mare won her 11th race from 62 starts, has now banked $141,467 and paid $6.70 to win. The time of the mile established a new lifetime mark for In High Cotton and was just one-fifth of a second off the 1:51.4 divisional standard.
