Preferred To 'Back Nine'; Demers Triples

The Back Nine capitalized off a second-over trip to best Rose Run Speedster by a half length in the $8,100 Preferred Handicap Trot at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Sunday, March 3.

Talbotcreek Suzie took control while Rose Run Speedster sat second through a :27.3 opening quarter. Lmc Mass Gem, positioned third, soon tipped first over with The Back Nine catching the cover moving toward a :57.2 half. Talbotcreek Suzie continued on the lead under minimal pressure past three-quarters in 1:26.2 and held a length lead turning into the stretch.

Rose Run Speedster spun out of the pocket to overtake Talbotcreek Suzie through the lane while The Back Nine kicked off cover and stormed to through the center of the course to the wire. The Back Nine outsprinted Rose Run Speedster to stop the clock in 1:56.4 while Lmc Mass Gem gave pursuit from third.

A five-year-old gelding by Muscle Mass, The Back Nine won his sixth race from 21 starts, earning $45,667. Trainer-driver Marie Claude Auger co-owns the $23.60 winner with owner 2273824146.

Trainer Gerard Demers collected three victories on the 12-race program. He sent Cams Lucky Sam ($13.00) to a 1:55.3 off-the-pace win in a $6,900 claiming pace early in the card before sweeping the late double with Rustys Flying ($2.60) winning by two-lengths in 1:57 in a $4,800 claiming pace and P L Kahluaa ($8.50) wiring a $6,000 conditioned pace in 1:55.4.
