Grey Sea pocketed the victory in the featured $10,000 Fillies and Mares Winners Over Handicap Pace on Thursday (March 28) evening at Fraser Downs.
Hang On Sloopy (Tyson Jacoby) returned off the feature win in last week's Fraser Open with a sprint to the top from the center of the wings. The mare designated herself as the pacesetter in the mile, setting panels in :26.3, :56.2 and 1:24.4. John Abbott steered Gord Abbott-conditioned Grey Sea into the pocket spot behind Hang On Sloopy, following her lead with a 1-1/2-length buffer between the two. In High Cotton (Kelly Hoerdt) advanced to the top around the final turn. She sprinted towards the wire, but Grey Sea bested her by a neck at the wire in 1:54.4. Hang On Sloopy had to settle for third.
Bred and owned by Seaspray Stables Ltd, Grey Sea (Custard The Dragon-Preference) earned her first win of the season in five tries and her 15th victory from 32 career appearances. She pushed her career bankroll to $107,550. The five-year-old mare returned a $6.70 ticket to win to her backers.
Diva Amour won her sixth straight race on Thursday's card with Kelly Hoerdt holding the lines of his student for the three-quarter length score in 1:54.4. Hoerdt co-owns the four-year-old Custard The Dragon-Art Amour mare with Fred Gilbert.
The victory was her seventh win in 10 starts this season and ninth win in 38 career starts. She moved her career bankroll to $55,435. Diva Amour returned $7.20 as the 3-1 second choice.
