The six-year-old Smart Shark gelding Outlawgrabbingears persevered through a first-over journey to claim victory in the $13,000 Horses & Geldings Preferred 2 & 3 Handicap Pace at The Raceway at Western Fair District on Tuesday (March 29).
Pembrook Legacy N, the 3-2 favourite, led the field to a :28.1 first quarter and slowed the tempo to a :59.1 half, prompting trainer-driver Paul Davies to send Outlawgrabbingears out of fourth for the lead. Clever Character, also off the 3-2 favourite, caught cover to race second over as Outlawgrabbingears stayed at Pembrook Legacy N’s throat to three-quarters in 1:27.4. Off the corner, Outlawgrabbingears put away Pembrook Legacy N as Clever Character sprung off cover to take aim at the late leader, but fell short by a half length at the end of a 1:57.1 mile. Alex Having Fun closed from third over for show and Racemup took fourth.
Co-owned by Davies with Nicole Davies, Outlawgrabbingears won his third race from 10 starts this season and his 32nd in 83 starts, lifting his lifetime earnings to $373,635. He paid $13.60 to win.
Later in the card, a racing oddity unfolded when horses crossed the line for the sixth race. Pylon-starter Lets Get Pickled went coast to coast in the $6,000 conditioned pace to post a 1:56.1 victory with his rivals finishing in post-position order. J Harris drove the Duane Marfisi trainee, who paid $6.90 to win in the rare finish.
