Ms Mac N Cheese turned in a career-best performance as she held off Waasmula to win the $30,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace featured on Good Friday (March 25) at Woodbine Racetrack.
Sylvain Filion drove Ms Mac N Cheese to the 1:51.3 victory for trainer Richard Moreau and owner David Ratchford of North Sydney, N.S. The four-year-old Badlands Hanover-Mr Delis Filly mare shaved three-fifths of a second off her lifetime mark in nosing out Waasmula at the wire.
Sent off as the 4-5 favourite, Ms Mac N Cheese crossed to command from the outermost post six in a blazing :25.2 first quarter and remained unchallenged to the half in :54.4. As she continued to three-quarters in 1:23.3, her stablemate Witch Dali (Doug McNair) was flushed from the pocket when Waasmula (Trevor Henry) moved from fourth. Ms Mac N Cheese drew clear on top entering the stretch as Filion pulled her plugs, but Waasmula made a late dash for the cash. Those two mares hit the wire in tandem with Ms Mac N Cheese ultimately holding on by a slim margin. She paid $3.60 to win. Early trailer Lights Go Out (Phil Hudon) came on for third, finishing one length behind.
Ms Mac N Cheese now had three wins and four seconds from nine starts this year, good for $77,660 in earnings. Lifetime, she has won 17 times while accumulating a bankroll that tops $450,000.
