Kolbees Star and Awsome Valley took the feature trots on Wednesday, March 23 at Dover Downs while Tim Tetrick, with five victories, and Tony Morgan, with four, combined to win more than half of the 15-race card.
Driven by Corey Callahan in a $18,500 trot, race favourite Kolbees Star took the inside course, coming along the passing lane to notch a lifetime record 1:56 victory beating eight rival four and five-year-olds for his fourth win of the year. Royal Status (Jim Morand), off at 18-1, finished second with 32-1 shot Sweet Jesse T (Ross Wolfenden) third. Along with a second and a third, Kolbees Star, an altered son of Lear Jetta-Ultimate Star trained by Joe Holloway, has earned $37,655 in eight 2016 starts for PCF Stable.
The $17,500 Winners Over trot was even faster. Frank Chick’s Awsome Valley showed the most late speed to catch Bluebird Reverend (Montrell Teague) in the closing strides for a 1:52.2 triumph. It was the second of four Wednesday winning trips for Tony Morgan, the second-leading all time winning driver in North America. Kevin Lare trains the Valley Victor-Nannina Ambrosio gelding, a winner for the 31st time in his career. He has earned $441,698 lifetime. Tough Mac (Callahan), the race favorite, finished third.
Tim Tetrick capped off his five-win performance driving On The Sly, also owned by Frank Chick and trained by Kevin Lare, to a 1:54.4 victory in the last race of the day -- one of two $14,500 trots for young horses. Ah Me (Carlo Poliseno) was next in front of Windsun Cobra (Pat Berry).
In the other $14,500 trot, Brewmaster gave hot driver George Dennis his third win of the day and seventh in two nights, scoring a 1:56 victory. The win followed up three consecutive second-place finishes for the Glidemaster-Dance Girl Dance gelding, who is owned by trainer Brit Evans and Brian Hoffecker. Favourite Powerful Charger (Tetrick) was runner-up with Deacons Valley (Ross Wolfenden) the show finisher.
