Nick Steward put the pedal to the metal with G A Speed Sammy in Monday’s $13,000 Horses & Geldings Preferred 2 Handicap at the Raceway at Western Fair District, and the pacer responded with a blowout triumph in a sharp clocking of 1:54.3.

G A Speed Sammy powered to the lead from Post 3 and never looked back after whacking out fractions of :28.3, :58.2 and 1:26. His :28.3 closing quarter helped propel him to the win by 3-3/4 lengths over Artistic Pick. Crankys Boy took home third prize.

Colin Johnson trains the six-year-old son of Shanghai Phil for Debbie Element of Rockwood, ON and Stephane Brosseau of L’assomption, QC. It was the second victory of the season for the 22-time winner who lifted his overall cash stash to $117,161.

Mercenary was a wire-to-wire winner in the $10,000 Horses & Geldings Preferred 3 at The Raceway at Western Fair District for trainer/driver George Ketros in a time of 1:54.2.

The eight-year-old son of Somebeachsomewhere-Ideal News sprinted to the top from Post 2 and never looked back after throwing down fractions of :27.4, :57.2 and 1:25.2. He used a :29-second final frame to win by 5-3/4 lengths over Bit Of Luck. Jack Of Clubs took home the show dough.

Mark Ketros owns the gelding who won for the first time this season from five attempts. The 28-time winner has banked $166,100 to date.
