Despite a slow dispatch in his four-year-old debut, Many A Man ($68.30) certainly got it right in the end, finding his best strides in the final eighth of a 1:59.4 mile to upset in The Raceway at Western Fair District’s featured $8,500 Preferred 3 Trot on Wednesday evening (March 21).
Last but one in the early stages, Many A Man was well off the pacesetting Rainbow Gold (Tyler Borth) through tepid fractions of :29 and 1:00.1. As the outer flow formed behind Majestic Marvel (Ryan Holliday) approaching the start of the second circuit, Bob McClure elected to save ground with Many A Man, and the four-year-old Manofmanymissions entire gradually worked to within three lengths of the lead at the conclusion of a :29 third quarter.
McClure found room to switch Many A Man off the pegs with three-sixteenths to go, and the pair circled three-wide off the home turn to pass the stalling Majestic Marvel before reeling in Rainbow Gold just beyond mid-stretch and drawing clear by 1-1/2 lengths. Overcomebyvictory (Robert Shepherd) found room to sneak up the pegs from the pocket to narrowly nab Rainbow Gold for runner-up honours.
Trainer Bob McIntosh co-owns seven-time winner Many A Man with the CSX Stables and Dave Boyle.
