Wambam Sam came into Monday’s $35,000 Preferred Handicap at Dover Downs with a 5-for-10 record in 2011, and thanks to his last second heroics he was able to

bolster his impressive stats.

With trainer Daryl Bier at the controls, Wambam Sam got away last in the six-horse field while Three Of Spades threw down fractions of :26.2, :55.1 and 1:22.2. Still sitting last going into the final quarter, Wambam Sam tipped out to be third over and then used a :27.3 final frame to prevail in going away fashion. He drew clear to win by 1-1/4 lengths over Jeremys Successor, with race favourite Schoolkids not far behind in third.

Bier, who co-owns the five-year-old son of Real Artist-Roses For Sammie with Glenn Del Russo and Charles Dombeck, watched the gelding win for the 18th time in his career while lifting his lifetime earnings to $279,973.
