Billy Davis, Jr. used the element of surprise to capture the $14,800 Preferred Pace at Western Fair Raceway with well-known closer, Bob Watts, who found himself in the role of pacesetter in the Monday feature

at the half-mile oval.

The five-year-old son of Real Desire-Art Queen drew the rail on the day of the draw, and he didn’t let it go to waste. Sent off as the 2-5 favourite, Bob Watts was hustled to the lead and after chopping out panels of :28.4, :58.3 and 1:27.1 he stepped home in a :30-second clip to win by a head over Upfront Hannahsboy in 1:57.1. Ruthless Ace was a lapped-on third in the six-horse affair.

David Kryway of Amherstburg and Meadowbranch Stables Inc of Lynden, ON share ownership on the Rick Zeron trainee who is now 2-for-10 this season. The 20-time winner has banked close to $30,000 this year and more than $187,000 to date.
