Trainer/driver Paul Davies seized the lead with Outlawgrabbingears and never let go to take the $13,000 Horses & Geldings Preferred 2 & 3 Handicap Pace at The Raceway at Western Fair District on Tuesday (March 15).
Davies dashed the six-year-old Smart Shark gelding off the car from post five while Racemup, the even-money favourite and leaving from post six, landed in the pocket to a :28.3 first quarter. Outlawgrabbingears snagged a breather to a :59.4 half, prompting Dragon Energy to lunge off the pegs from third and attack the pacesetter on the second circuit. Dragon Energy drew to within a length of Outlawgrabbingears to three-quarters in 1:30.1 but promptly started to falter around the final turn, leaving the leader to his own devices through the lane as he coasted to a 1-1/2-length score over Racemup in 1:59.1. Livin Large rallied for third and Come On Barney closed from last for fourth.
Co-owned by Davies with Nicole Davies, Outlawgrabbingears won his second race from eight starts this season and his 31st from 81 overall, lifting his lifetime earnings to $367,135. He paid $4.20 to win.
