Healthy Superfecta Payoff At 'Mighty M'

Rarely does a horse starting from the pole position go off at odds of 48-1. And if they do, hardly ever do they emerge victorious -- but sometimes they do win. Case in point: Wantasmile.

The nine-year-old Grinfromeartoear horse, who had only three thirds in seven previous starts, lit up the Monticello Raceway toteboard on Wednesday, March 12. Wantasmile and river Patrick Beeler found racing room along the pylons to convert at odds of 48-1. The duo collared the 18-1 Tongue Twister (Bruce Aldrich Jr.) in 1:59 over the wet and muddy track.

Those who wagered on Wantasmile were certainly smiling when the pacer paid $99.00, $27.00 and $16.00 across the board. Tongue Twister (No. 8) returned $16.20 for place and $7.10 for show, which sparked a $1,091.00 exacta payoff for those holding tickets on the 1-8 combination.

But it gets better.

When 11-1 shot Topgun Raider (Mike Merton) finished third and paid $7.40 to show, the 1-8-4 trifecta payoff was $11,690.00. And despite second choice in the wagering, Happyending (Zeke Parker) finishing fourth, still 1-8-4-7 superfecta combination was worth a whopping $34,275.00.
