In a joint announcement this afternoon, the province of Prince Edward Island and the PEI Harness Racing Industry Association spread the news that a new structure for Harness Racing PEI has been decided upon
.
According to a report by The Guardian, the new arrangement will see HRPEI and the Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at Charlottetown Driving Park merge.
The article states that the move has come after extensive industry consultation.
“The sustainability of the harness racing industry is a common goal shared by Government, HRPEI and Red Shores. We know the gaming industry is changing rapidly; players today expect more choices than ever and the status quo is not an option," Wes Sheridan, minister of Finance and Municipal Affairs, was quoted as saying. "This is a made-in-Prince Edward Island solution that celebrates the tradition of harness racing, while ensuring we can build upon the legacy already established,” said Sheridan.
