Awesome Hill was in position to sweep Thursday’s $42,600 final of the Ontario Girls Pacing Series at Woodbine Mohawk Park, but after dictating the tempo for the majority of the mile she was picked off late by Just Daisy.

Just Daisy got away fourth in the rich tilt for driver Chris Christoforou while Village Jade powered to the lead and threw down a first quarter of :28. Race favourite Awesome Hill popped out of the pocket in the backstretch, however, and in a matter of strides she found her way to the front. Awesome Hill marched the field past the mid-way point in :58.1 before picking up the tempo while under pressure around the final turn when attacked by Just Daisy. The two zipped by the three-quarter pole in 1:26.3 before Just Daisy used a :27.4 closing panel to win by a nose over Awesome Hill in 1:54.3. Village Jade took home third prize.

Bred, owned and trained by Terry Fritz of Walkerton, Ont., Just Daisy won for the first time this season after going 9-for-20 during last year’s sophomore campaign. The four-year-old daughter of Sunshine Beach-O See My Bo lifted her lifetime earnings to $108,505 with the win.
