Trainer Richard Moreau took both featured pacing events on a 'sloppy' track Sunday, March 10 at Flamboro Downs, sending Fine Diamond to victory in the $11,500 Preferred 2 Pace and Boomboom Ballykeel in the $8,500 Preferred 3 Pace.
Fine Diamond sat last of the sixth as Toot Toot N led to the quarter in :27.3. Odds-on favourite Pretty Handsome soon tipped first over as the tempo slowed toward the :59 half and gradually advanced towards the leader approaching the backstretch.
Pretty Handsome drew within a neck of the lead past three-quarters in 1:29 but stalled rounding the final turn. Driver Alfie Carroll wound his bid with Fine Diamond into the final turn and rushed wide through the stretch to nail Toot Toot N by a half-length in 2:00.3. Pretty Handsome held third.
A six-year-old stallion by Rock N Roll Heaven, Fine Diamond won his 12th race from 111 starts, earning $579,147. Ecurie Csl and Gaar Racing Stables own the $15.50 winner.
Driver Louis-Philippe Roy gave Boomboom Ballykeel a pocket trip before popping off the rail into the final turn in progress to a 1:58 victory as the favourite in the Preferred 3.
The eight-year-old son of Mach Three yielded as Paparazzi Hanover swooped from post seven to the top heading to a :28.3 opening quarter. Boomboom Ballykeel stayed put past a :59 half but vacated the pylons entering the backstretch to press the pacesetter past a 1:28 third quarter. Grinding to a half-length lead into the stretch, Boomboom Ballykeel expanded his margin to a length and a quarter at the wire while Paparazzi Hanover chased from second and Par Intended took third.
Owned by Ballykeel Racing, Boomboom Ballykeel won his 38th race from 196 starts, earning $928,216. He paid $3.90 to win.
